Their shows had already had huge ratings, they had a hit single, and were climbing aboard their first hit concert tour. So it's no wonder this album sold millions! Most of the music featured on the first Monkees album had little to do with the four boys. The best studio musicians and song writers were behind this LP. This would later upset the four boys but regardless of the fact that it has been documented to death that they did not play their own instruments (which they did) this proves to be one of their best albums. Micky Dolenz makes a huge debut as a vocalist here with several awesome songs. He first sings lead on the unforgettable "Theme From The Monkees." He also sings the #1 hit "Last Train To Clarksville.". There are no bad songs really and if you are fan of the show you will love this! It rather is a disappointment that Peter was not really part of this album. Although he is featured on the cover he did little in the recording sessions. The other bad thing is that the Monkees do not play their instruments on this album but none the less this is probably the third or fourth best Monkees album. Definetly worth getting! Selections: 1. (Theme From) The Monkees 2. Saturday's Child 3. I Wanna Be Free 4. Tomorrow's Gonna Be Another Day 5. Papa Gene's Blues 6. Take A Giant Step 7. I Can't Get Her Off My Mind (prev. unissued early version) 8. Last Train To Clarksville 9. This Just Doesn't Seem To Be My Day 10. Let's Dance On 11. I'll Be True To You 12. Sweet Young Thing 13. Gonna Buy Me A Dog 14. I Don't Think You Know Me (prev. unissued alt. version) THE MONKEES - THE BIRDS, THE BEES AND THE MONKEE - This mid-period effort is effectively The Monkees "White Album." Given collective production credit and individual allotments of studio time, Mickey, Davy and Mike each held separate sessions to produce their contributions. Peter Tork, though pictured, is basically absent from the original album. Nesmith's contributions are the real stars, including brilliant psychedelic influences on "Auntie's Municipal Court," featuring layered, droning guitars and a filtered lead vocal from Mickey. "Tapioca Tundra" melds Latin rhythms with space-age production touches, beautifully recorded stereo guitars and a wonderfully memorable melody. Further out, Nesmith salutes the music of dusty 78s on the monaural "Magnolia Simms" and unwinds on the lengthy experimental rock of "Writing Wrongs." The diversity of his work is hugely impressive. "The Poster" ventures into the sort of harmonies made popular by the Hollies and Bee Gees. The only truly bright spots are John Stewart's "Daydream Believer," the Monkees last #1 single, and Boyce and Hart's "Valleri." The cautionary tale, "Zor and Zam," closes the album with a dramatic tale of kings unable to war. The bonus tracks provide two glimpses of the soon-to-depart Peter Tork. "Alvin," an acapella piece that was originally to introduce "Daydream Believer," and the legendarily expensive production of "Lady's Baby." The latter is more famous for its cost than its content, which is a Lovin' Spoonful-Buffalo Springfield-Mama's & Papa's-ish ode to Tork's live-in lady's baby. Two more Davy ballads ("I'm Gonna Try" and "The Girl I Left Behind Me") are, well, two more Davy Ballads. Finally, an early mix of "P.O. Box 9847" is interesting for its changes (most notably a Moog synthesizer in place of the strings), but doesn't stand up to the final mix. The group dynamic forged on "Headquarters" and "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.," was all but dissipated by this fifth effort. The result is a middling album with some fine tracks by Michael Nesmith and a handful of stellar hit singles. As a "band," however, the Monkees had clearly peaked. Selections: Dream World, Auntie's Municipal Court, We Were Made For Each Other, Tapioca Tundra, Daydream Believer, Writing Wrongs, I'm Gonna Try (prev. unissued), I'll Be Back Up On My Feet, The Poster, P.O.Box 9847, Magnolia Simms, Valleri, Zor And Zam, P.O.Box 9847 (prev. unissued alternate mix), Alvin (prev. unissuedTHE MONKEES - PISCES, AQUARIUS, CAPRICORN & JONES LTD. - The beauty of this album is that all four Monkees contribute different styles and yet it all comes together in a cohesive whole. For creating imagery and evoking nostalgia, it's hard to beat "Pleasant Valley Sunday". The lyrics say it all so simply and so clearly. One listen, and you are back to suburbia, sunshine and backyard barbecues. "Love Is Only Sleeping", "The Door Into Summer" and "What Am I Doing Hangin' Round" are among the best Monkee songs featuring Mike's singing. But he may have saved his best for last with his soft and touching vocal on "Don't Call On Me". On these songs, the Monkee's songwriting team really came up with some especially meaningful lyrics. As Mike's presence increased, Micky's decreased, and he sings lead on just three songs. But all of them are winners. The near perfect "Pleasant Valley" has already been mentioned. "Words" is a dark and haunting little tune, featuring Peter's background vocals. Micky's rendition of Nesmith's "Daily Nightly", is just pure crazy psychedelia. Of course Davy has his tunes too. He's probably at his best when he is able to combine dancing with his singing, as was the case when songs were performed on the program. "Cuddly Toy" and "Star Collector" are examples of this. Features:• 180g Vinyl Selections:Salesman, She Hangs Out, The Door Into Summer, Love Is Only Sleeping, Cuddly Toy, Words, The Door Into Summer (prev. unissued alternate mix), Love Is Only Sleeping (prev. unissued alternate mix), Hard To Believe, What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round?, Peter Percival Patterson's Pet Pig Porky, Pleasant Valley Sunday, Daily Nightly, Don't Call On Me, Star Collector, Daily Nightly (prev. unissued alternate mix), Goin' Down (prev. unissued alternate mix) THE MONKEES - MORE OF THE MONKEESThis album features some of the best of the Monkees earlier work and has spawned some of the most memorable work of the Monkees' careers individually and collectively. "I'm A Believer", which is without argue the group's biggest hit is featured on this album as well as "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone", another well noted Monkees song. Some of the other fine moments on this album include "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)", "She", "Your Auntie Grizelda", as well as "Mary Mary" which would later become a big hit for 80's rap group Run-DMC. The album, however isn't without it's flaws. The sappy non-melodic "The Day We Fall in Love" could have easily been excluded from the album for example, wheras other tracks such as Davy Jones' "When Love Comes Knockin' (At Your Door) or Mike Nethsmith's "The Kinda Girl I Could Love" probably would have been better showcased on solo efforts, as neither cut featured any other Monkee. Sundazed introduces vinyl LP's of the first five Monkees albums! The complete original records with bonus tracks that have never before appeared on vinyl. Features:• High Quality 180g Vinyl Selections:She, When Love Comes Knockin' (At Your Door), Mary, Mary, Hold On Girl, Your Auntie Grizelda, (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone, I Don't Think You Know Me (prev. unissued mix), Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow), The Kind Of Girl I Could Love, The Day We Fall In Love, Sometime In The Morning, Laugh, I'm A Believer, Don't Listen To Linda* (prev. unissued version), I'll Spend My Life With You (alternate version). Last Train to Clarksville The Monkees Instant Replay 180 GRAM LIMITED EDITION LP (Red Vinyl) Limited Edition Red Vinyl! 180g Audiophile Vinyl Mastered by Friday Music's Joe Reagoso From Original Colgems Records Tapes! The Monkees have been one of the world’s most enduring rock and pop acts of all time. Since their beginnings in 1966, their television show, multiplatinum albums, hit singles and concert tours truly made The Monkees one of the most colossal stories in the music business. In 1969, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz went back to the studio as a trio this time and recorded the classic Instant Replay album. Noted for their hit single Tear Drop City, this masterwork also found The Monkees reuniting with the production team of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart for several of the tracks as well as previous team Monkees writers like Carole King and Neil Sedaka, and highly touted producers like Bones Howe (The Association/Tom Waits) and Shorty Rogers and resulted in some of the finest collaborations ever with this superstar act. Instant Replay also offered the first look at Michael Nesmith’s experimental and groundbreaking recording sessions in Nashville as well as solid compositions from all three Monkees. Opening up with the pop rocker Through The Looking Glass, Micky Dolenz is on top of his game vocally with a brilliant background of horns, Bobby Hart on piano and guitar work by legends Keith Allison (Paul Revere & The Raiders) and Gerry McGee (The Ventures/John Mayall). A major fan favorite, this classic was performed at many of the reunion concerts over the years. The late great Davy Jones belts out another Boyce and Hart classic with the haunting ballad Don’t Listen To Linda. The tune truly resonated with the fans back then and continues to be one of the more appreciated classics in his long list of time tested Monkees favorites. Carole King and Gerry Goffin’s I Won’t Be The Same Without Her features a strong vocal performance by Michael Nesmith and the stunning guitar work of both Monkees’ Peter Tork and Glen Campbell. A real summer time feeling song, this track would be a nice bridge to Micky Dolenz’s orchestral masterpiece Just A Game. It is no secret that Michael Nesmith was a fan of country music, but also lauded as one of the first pioneers of the country rock genre, not only with his contributions to the earlier Monkees’ recordings as far back as Papa Gene’s Blues, even for other noted artists like Linda Ronstadt for whom he penned her first smash single Different Drum. For the Instant Replay album, Nesmith ventured to Nashville’s RCA Studios and cut Don’t Wait For Me, the first released tune from his now famous Nashville sessions. With the fusion of country studio players and the voice and guitar of Michael Nesmith, The Monkees again were on the forefront of this new genre and would continue with this groundbreaking sound ever more so into future classics like The Monkees Present. As the sixties would come to a close, Davy Jones would also contribute his major impact on the generation with his truly hip and psychedelic masterpiece You And I. Noted for its hard rock opening to Side Two, the track also features the stunning lead guitar textures of Neil Young who recently departed with The Buffalo Springfield. More favorites like Mike Nesmith’s While I Cry is one of the artist’s finest compositions of the era. With Mike’s beautiful acoustic guitar work and help from friends like Harry Nilsson, this ballad would truly become one of the more enduring songs from this 1969 classic Monkees album. Neil Sedaka and Carol Bayer Sager contribute one of the classiest Monkees ballads ever with The Girl I Left Behind Me. Once again, the late great Davy Jones provides a superstar vocal second to none, with a soulful orchestra fill and band setting featuring the production and skillful piano work of Neil Sedaka, while Micky Dolenz would close out the album with his classic Shorty Blackwell. The whimsical tale of Micky’s cat and a nod to his friends The Beatles’ A Day In The Life, Shorty Blackwell would take almost a year to record and feature a bevy of the original wrecking crew of Hollywood musicians like drummer Jim Gordon (Eric Clapton/Traffic), Tommy Tedesco on guitar and even his sister Coco Dolenz on vocals. This track along with the other eleven tunes make this one of the more enduring and loved albums in the superior catalog Monkees classics. After the 1970 release of Changes (FRMLP1190), The Monkees disbanded quietly after one of the most incredible recording and television careers ever imagined. In 1986, it was announced that The Monkees were coming back! To add even more excitement to the welcomed news, MTV aired a marathon of all The Monkees television shows. In record time, new and reissued recordings, airplay, TV and retail support, and of course one of the most successful concert tours of all time, lasting over three years, truly brought the band back into the forefront of modern pop and rock music history.During their whirlwind 1987 concert season, Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones and Peter Tork released their first studio album in over sixteen years called Pool It!. The 1980’s pop/rock infused album not only did good business at radio and retail, but it was also a home run with the newly created video channels like Nickelodeon which voted the first single Heart And Soul number one on their show Nick Rocks, which also featured one of Micky Dolenz’s finest vocal deliveries in years.A fantastic second single soon followed with Ian Hunter’s Every Step Of The Way featuring the late great Davy Jones. Davy’s supercharged performance was exceptional on this tune which was also turned into an equally hip video during their promotion and tour around this fantastic new album.Another rock masterpiece can be visited once again with Midnight. With its Clapton-like guitar fills, a fine rock lyric, and a classic Micky Dolenz doing his R&B/rock vibe seamlessly, the track was truly another highlight on this fine new album.Pool It! was undeniably a treasure trove of new music from these superstars. It brought back the aura and feel of a newly reformed spirit of the '60s, which was truly needed during an era of youth-oriented one hit wonders and video star domination. It has been a sorely missed Monkees masterwork in the physical domain now for many years...that is until now.Friday Music in its ever increasing championing of The Monkees catalog of unforgettable classics is very honored to revisit The Monkees Pool It! for the first time on 180 Gram Audiophile BLUE Vinyl. As their ninth and last album from their hit making 1966-1970 era, The Monkees Changes is one of their most desirable and collectable efforts fetching over $300 for a mint copy of the album. This highly regarded fan favorite was a treasure trove of songs providing the soundtrack to the final year of their Saturday afternoon airings of their critically acclaimed The Monkees television show, as well as featuring the double-sided hit single Oh My My and I Love You Better. As with all of their fine Colgems recordings, the superstar vocals of Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones are showcased as their first class musicianship excels throughout this 1970 session. Together, the two Monkees legends prove once again with the Changes album that their music is timeless and will continue to stand the test of time. The late great Davy Jones revisits the hit sounds of the Boyce and Hart catalog with a tremendous vocal workout on their I Never Thought It Peculiar as well as his rockin’ delivery on 99 Pounds. His sorely missed vocals also radiate on the classic Do You Feel It Too, making this one of the more interesting pop mid tempo ballads in the Monkees catalog.Aside from the aforementioned double sided hits Oh My My and I Love You Better, Micky Dolenz’s performances continue his superstar tradition with the solid balladry of the brilliant soft California rock sounds of Ticket On A Ferry Ride and Tell Me Love.Produced by the much acclaimed sixties producer/writer Jeff Barry (The Monkees, Neil Diamond, The Archies), Changes was the first full-fledged production by this Monkees collaborator as it showed the true pop genius of both the band and producer in the studio. Augmented with some very cool seventies writers like Andy Kim (Rock Me Gently) and the late Bobby Bloom (Montego Bay), this final Monkees album of their first golden era truly was a grand farewell from this band until their unbelievable history making 1986 return.Friday Music continues their extensive Monkees 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series with their classic "Changes", for the first time on 180 Gram Audiophile translucent GREEN vinyl. The picture featured appearances by Nicholson, Teri Garr, Carol Doda, Annette Funicello, Frank Zappa, Sonny Liston, Timothy Carey, Ray Nitschke. Dennis Hopper and Toni Basil also appeared in brief non-speaking parts. The selection of music and dialogue approximates the flow of the movie and was compiled by Jack Nicholson. Showing a growing influence of Frank Zappa on the Monkee's music, the soundtrack album intersperses the six proper songs with bits of Ken Thorne's incidental music, dialogue fragments and oddball sound effects, for an overall effect close to Zappa's "We're Only In It For The Money".The Monkees were a pop rock group assembled in Los Angeles in 1966 by Robert "Bob" Rafelson and Bert Schneider for the American television series The Monkees. The show aired from 1966 to 1968 featuring the musical acting quartet of Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, and Davy Jones. The Monkees had many international hits which are still heard on pop and oldies stations including "I'm a Believer", "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone", "Daydream Believer", "Last Train to Clarksville", and "Pleasant Valley Sunday".Features Ry Cooder, Neil Young and Carole King on "As We Go Along" and Stephen Stills on "Long Title". Mastered by Ron McMaster at Capitol Studios! Includes Two Mono Tracks Plus Demos and Alternate Versions! Assembled in Los Angeles in 1966 by Robert "Bob" Rafelson and Bert Schneider for the American television series The Monkees, which aired from 1966 to 1968, the musical acting quartet was composed of Americans Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork, and Englishman Davy Jones. The music for the series had been created by Don Kirschner and throughout the life of the band, many more esteemed songwriters added their input to The Monkees phenomenon, including Neil Diamond ("A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You") and Carole King ("Pleasant Valley Sunday"). As time progressed the members of the band addressed the criticism which was leveled at them and began to exert more of a creative contribution; initially they had only provided vocals, by the third album Headquarters they were writing and playing much of their own material. After a struggle for creative autonomy with their record label, the group had finally been allowed to record by themselves. The Monkees have had many international hits which are still heard on pop and oldies stations. These include "I'm a Believer", "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone", "Daydream Believer", "Last Train to Clarksville", and "Pleasant Valley Sunday".Headquarters was the group's third album which contained 60 previously unreleased recordings. For these sessions the band exercised creative control over all aspects of the recording process and they played most of the instruments. "Selections From The Headquarters Sessions" contains 8 tracks pulled from the long out of print Rhino Handmade "Headquarters Sessions" release. All the tracks are previously unreleased on vinyl, and is a mix of both alternate versions of songs that made the original Headquarters album along with outtakes.Headquarters reached #1 on the Billboard 200 and was certified double platinum in the U.S. with sales of more than two million copies within the first two months of release. As of 2008 it had sold seven million copies in the U.S. and achieved global sales of 11.6 million. It is included in the 2006 book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.During the early months of 1967, the four Monkees sequestered themselves in the RCA Music Center of the World Studios on Sunset Boulevard near Vine Street in Hollywood. Many of the songs were written by the four group members, or came together organically in jam sessions. A few of teh songs were also written by songwriters Boyce and Hart. Michael Nesmith recruited fellow folk musician Chip Douglas, a member of The Modern Folk Quartet and The Turtles, to produce the album. Douglas, credited under his birth name, Douglas Farthing Hatlelid, also contributed bass guitar and a song.Features:• Numbered, Limited Edition - 2500 Copies• Red Vinyl• 4-Color jacket with letter pressed limited edition numbering• Mastered by Ron McMaster at Capitol Studios• Pressed at Rainbo• All tracks previously unreleased on vinyl• Includes 2 mono tracks• Includes demos and alternate versionsMusicians:Davy JonesMichael NesmithMicky DolenzPeter TorkSelections: Side A:1. They show Micky's versatility as a songwriter, a musician and also show just how a good his voice has always been!'' Among the tracks included is a rendition of ''Daybreak,'' written, arranged and conducted by Dolenz' pal Harry Nilsson; ''A Lover's Prayer'' written by Randy Newman; a medley of classic Buddy Holly tunes; and two sides (''Easy on You'' b/w ''Oh Someone'') with Peter Tork helping out on arrangements. Two sides from Micky's collaboration with Michael Lloyd as Starship have also been included.Dolenz has actively participated in the creation of this release, too. 7A states of the artist, ''He's been wonderful although he was more than a little surprised that two fans [Lee and Glenn Gretlund] in the U.K. were doing this! As he said to the executive producers of this project, 'I am incredibly surprised, and very flattered, and honored - I am very glad that some of this stuff is being listened to! I liked it, at the time! And I'm glad that other people do. It's fantastic.'' Indeed, Dolenz produced some adventurous work at MGM; fellow Monkee Davy Jones also landed at the label during this period.Features:• Special Limited Edition - Only 300 Copies• 180g Vinyl LP• Red Vinyl• Includes exclusive interview with Micky Dolenz• Mastered from the original master tapes where possible• IIncludes 12 page booklet with extensive and detailed liner notes and never before published pictures by Henry Diltz• Special Gatefold Sleeve• ImportSelections:Side 11.
